The International Energy Law Review (UK) publishes the article by TV&P lawyer analyzing legal consequences of the suspension of the South Stream pipeline project.

One of the main trends in EU–Russia energy cooperation is the growing inter-dependence in terms of natural gas export and import. Nevertheless, the existing political tensions caused by the situation in Ukraine (and related EU sanctions in the energy sector) mean that legal issues regarding joint construction and operation projects for the supply of gas to Europe are of considerable importance at the present time.

The author states that the key factors that contributed to the discontinuance of the construction of the South Stream Pipeline were the issues relating to the adoption, and entry into force, of the EU Third Energy Package as well as the issues relating to its application to the South Stream Project. The author touches upon the legal consequences of the discontinuance of the project for the private entities, i.e. the issue of damages caused by the termination of the contracts for the supply of goods and services related to the pipeline project.

The International Energy Law Review (established in 1982) is an academic journal publishing articles analyzing the legal developments within the energy sector of different countries. The article may be downloaded at the TV&P website.
